You may simply receive instructions to change the wheel size to a certain number - change the last number in the entry. Find the car's entry in the default.ide and paste the information specified in the readme file. You may need to change the default.ide line for a car. Make sure their number does not match a previous color - see here for more info on this. If you need to add new colors, paste them underneath the last entry on the top of the file. The first number is the primary color and the second is the secondary color - see here for more info. Open carcols.dat in your data folder with a text editor.Ĭhange the car's colors by pasting new lines next to its entry towards the bottom of the file. If the readme file does not specify any changes to the carcols.dat file, skip this step. Make sure that "read-only" is unchecked for your entire installation folder, or other errors may occur. It's simply because Rockstar have apparently tweaked the Steam version a little bit before publishing it. It's also worth explaining why the retail (CD/DVD) version users are not affected by this problem. The game can still be considered vanilla. Apart from the aforementioned texture, nothing else was deliberately changed. The affected reflection texture (named "reflection01") is stored in the "particle.txd" file, which is an archive that stores quite a few other textures responsible for, you guessed it, mostly particle effects. After launching the game, all vehicles were back to normal - the problem was no more. Turns out that all I had to do was remove the alpha channel (which was unused anyway) from the said texture and that was it. Though TXD Workshop may not be the best for setting up TXD files, it has a built-in IMG archive editor, allowing one to browse all. TXD Workshop, a texture dictionary editor that has been around for years, only since recent years to be succeeded by Magic TXD. Since GTA III uses only one reflection texture for all vehicles, I modified it a little bit. This program is entirely free and available from various GTA modding sites. I, and probably some of you too, have already noticed that reflective surfaces on vehicles are too dark or opaque yellow - everything else is just fine. I've been trying to find a fix for this bug since I bought GTA III a week ago during the Rockstar Weekend sale. Now, let me describe what this is all about. Replace your original "particle.txd" file (not the copy!) with the downloaded one.
